It has been about 15 months since I designed my very first layered mandala. In that time, I’ve learned a lot. I thought it would be fun this week to create another design.
The layered mandala projects can look beautiful and complicated, yet they’re easy to cut and assemble. This design has 6 layers. Truly the hardest part is picking the colors you want to use for the project.
Materials Needed For Layered Mandala
- 65 lb Cardstock
- Foam tabs
- Spray adhesive
- Light grip mat (Cricut blue mat)
- Cricut Maker – or your favorite cutting machine
- Design #141– Round Floral Layered Mandala SVG – The free cut file (available in my freebie vault—get the password at the bottom of this post).
How To Cut And Assemble A Layered Mandala
Start by downloading and unzipping the free SVG from my Freebie Vault. This design will be found under #141. If you have not yet joined my email list, you’ll find a spot near the end of this post to sign up and access all the free cut files found here at Special Heart Studio. 💜
Once the design has been unzipped, upload to Cricut Design Space, or your cutting machine software. I set the mandala pictured at 8 inches so that it would fit in my 9×9″ shadowbox.
Once ready to cut, use a brayer to ensure the paper is firmly adhered to your mat. This will greatly reduce tearing while the mandala cuts. I use Medium Cardstock setting with this Recollections 65lb. cardstock on my Maker. Machines do vary, so you may need to find the perfect setting for your machine.
Once cut, it’s time to remove the cut from the mat.
Turning the mat upside down so that the paper is on your work surface. Gently bend the mat away from the paper, keeping it as flat as possible to your table to prevent curling.
Once all layers have been cut and removed from the mat. It’s time to assemble.
I started by gluing the top (most intricate) layer to the second layer with Elmer’s Craft Bond Spray Adhesive.
After the top layer is secured with spray adhesive, all other layers were connected using foam tabs.
To complete the project, I attached the layered mandala in a 9×9″ shadow box frame using the same foam tabs.

Beautiful!
Thank you for sharing.
Hello,
I just downloaded your new layered mandala #141 and only a photo is there, not the actual file that I can upload into Cricut. Am I doing something wrong? I’ve used your site many times and this is the first time I’ve had an issue.
Thank you for all you do.
Kim
Hi Kim,
Only the SVG file is included in the download on this one. It may look like a photo depending what device you’re using, but if you upload it to Cricut Design Space, it is the SVG and will show layers.
Great post and design. You know, I hadn’t heard of the Elmer’s glue. If you’d created a hyperlink I bet you could have gotten some referrals from Amazon. 🙂
Hi Mandy. I have a hyperlink in the materials list. I should add it within the directions too. Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you!!This is beautiful!! I wonder if it si too intricate to six=ze down to 3 or 4 inches, for Christmas ornaments?
Hmmm. I think this is a challenge. I just may have to try. I’ll let you know how it goes.
